Zwart met messing is als kleurbenaming gekozen voor het Engelse brassy back. Een kleurslag die als zodanig erkend is bij de Oud Engelse Vechtkrielen.

                                     

                                            

Ten onrechte ben ik er vanuit gegaan dat brassyback vertaald met zwart met messing rug de naam is voor de Brahma in bijna dezelfde kleur, tot ik erachter kwam dat het toch wat anders is. De oud Engelse Vechtkriel is op basis van de wildkleur e+ brassyback genoemd, terwijl de Brahma in bijna dezelfde kleur op basis van tarwe eWh is. Met een tarwe basis is de naam Furnace of soms ook Furness genoemd waarbij de rug roodoranje wordt verlangd, het ligt voor de hand om het zwart met roodoranje rug te noemen. Er is bij de Brahma ook een zilvertarwe variant wat  zwart met zilver rug genoemd kan worden in het Engels is dat polecat.

 

Genoemde namen brassyback, furnace en polecat komen van oudsher voor bij de Vechtkrielen, de meest recente en enige literatuur daarover is van 1986 in The Royal Fowl.

In the Australian book "The Royal Fowl" (on Game fowl, but not exhibition standards), at the simplest level, this book suggests that all 3 varieties have the same/similar pattern in the males (heavily melanised, with a phaeomelanin back patch & striped hackles), but vary in phaeomelanin shade. The authors suggest the following:

• Brass Back = burnished brass

• Furnace = red of the very darkest hue, the colour of glowing coals on a forge fire....

• Polecat = carries the silver factor - yellow or silver accordingly.

*These are the descriptions for the back patch. The authors also note that all three varieties have flame coloured stripes on the hackles, although some specimens have none, and difference is in the nature of the coloured patch.

The authors also note that there is variation in historical description of these OEG varieties.

As to the hens, there isn't much description given on the varieties (basically says that the right hen coloured = a hen that produces the specific rooster colour required), but they do note that the Furnace hens are very dark breasted (blackish) with dark red shafts, the throat & below the ear the deepest blood red. The Polecats have the same dark pattern but the phaeomelanin (shafts, etc) are grey (note: Grey - probably means "Silver" in this context). The Brassy hens have the dark top & 'fawn' breast.
